The Joint Conference of
International Conference of Rebuilding Place – AVAN

The global rise of local tradition (wisdom) studies in recent decades has been a story of crossing cultures and transcending boundaries of disciplines. There has been significant return to the local tradition (wisdom) both in academic debates and practices for several reasons. Local tradition (wisdom) has been identified as a source of reference and solution for the global problems of identity formation, the disaster risk prevention, the global environmental problems, among others. In the middle of global influences in which the world is without border and placeless, local tradition has become a source of reference for establishing local identity formation.

In addition, local wisdom has significant roles in disaster mitigation and resilience. When the 2004 Tsunami Disaster hit Aceh, for example, it is evident that local wisdom, the oral history of Smong has saved many lives in Simeuleu Island. People sought refuge to the hills around the island. Therefore, the 2017 International Conference on Architecture aims to explore the value of the local tradition as part of present and future design and planning.

In doing this conference takes opportunity to promote a main theme “Reinvention of Local Tradition” and invites interdisciplinary, cross-cultural and integrated studies and perspectives on examining the roles of local tradition in architectural design and planning. The conference invites not only theoretical debates, but also practical experiences of reinventing local wisdoms for present and future needs.

Under this theme, there are several potential sub-themes invited.
